Curtis Collier’s Story

“I wanted to challenge students to address issues of sustainability and social justice and have students inquire into their own lives and behaviors. We used a learning package from Student Leadership and Sustainability provided from Be The Change Earth Alliance”

We are an urban school with an arts based mini school in an affluent area of Vancouver. The students were from two Grade 11 classes.

We used a learning package from Student Leadership and Sustainability provided from Be The Change Earth Alliance and I collaborated with a colleague, Alain Raoul, who teaches Social Justice. I wanted to challenge students to address issues of sustainability and social justice. I wanted students to inquire into their own lives and behaviors and look at how changes can contribute to an awareness of societal problems

We completed small group research projects using online research links to articles and videos. Be The Change Earth Alliance has videos and research links as well as writing packages to promote inquiry and reflection, and plan changes and actions to take on at a personal  and community level. Students discussed the research they did as well as the actions they took.

Students changed their actions and behaviors towards food choice, public transport, products and cosmetics. They presented to class mates and discussed with families and peers.
