Board of Directors

Be The Change’s esteemed directors represent a diverse range of professional disciplines and life paths, furthering the mission of environmental sustainability, social justice, and spiritual fulfillment through their combined experience and insight. They are:

Derek LaCroix - President

Derek is the Executive Director of the Lawyers Assistance Program of B.C. Derek practiced law in B.C. from 1975 to 1993 and was also called to the bar in Oregon in 1995. Since 1987, he has made personal development, spiritual growth, and working with others his avocation, obtaining a Diploma in Counseling in 1996 and a Ph.D. in 2003. Derek is also an accomplished speaker and workshop facilitator, and is involved with several non-profit boards. He received the designation of Queens Counsel in 2004 in recognition of his work in the legal community.

Aaron Leung - Secretary

We first started working with Aaron when he was only in grade 9 at Killarney Secondary and had joined their Green Team, since then he has been an SLS student, the leader of his Green Team,  and together we collaborated on many green initiatives at his school. Since graduating from Killarney, Aaron has gone on to pursue a Bachelor of Environment, Global Environmental Systems at Simon Fraser University and continues to excel in leadership positions  in many avenues. We are thrilled to have him on our Board.

Aaron is a strategic thinker involved in various aspects of environmental and social action and organization. He is a Junior Facilitator for Youth4Action with Metro Vancouver. He is also a member of the Children, Youth, and Families Advisory Committee for the City of Vancouver, and in the recent Municipal Election, he was a School Trustee candidate. Aaron brought his dedication and great energy to the Board in March 2018.

David Pel - Treasurer

David Pel, CGA, CPA has owned his own accounting firm, David Pel Company Inc., since 1991, and with his staff services approximately 500 clients annually. In addition to his professional career, David Pel is active in community service. In addition to supporting BTCEA , he is the founder and treasurer of the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association, on the board of Elim Housing Society, treasurer of the Burnaby Tennis Club, and an active fundraiser for Burnaby Family Life, a society serving youth at risk.

David joined the BTCEA Board in 2013 and has contributed greatly to BTCEA’s fundraising efforts and helped revise and maintain BTCEA’s financial budgeting approaches.

Maureen Jack-LaCroix - Director

Maureen is an inspiring speaker, workshop facilitator and environmental educator with over 15 years of experience delivering engaging ‘sustainability’ programs for adults in community and workplace as well as teachers and students in secondary schools. As the Founding Director of Be The Change Earth Alliance, she has activated thousands of individuals to make positive environmental behaviour change by connecting the big global issues to personal lifestyle choices. Through BTCEA Maureen developed an adult education program of symposia and action circles, wrote the Be The Change Action Guide and produced The Great Turning community engagement events. She went on to collaborate with secondary school teachers on the iterative design and development of ‘SLC: Student Leadership For Change’ EE learning resources and teacher aides. Maureen is also working with a wide variety of businesses to bolster employee engagement through sustainability programs in the workplace. Maureen was honoured as the ‘2017 Outstanding Individual in an Organization’ by EECOM, the Canadian Environmental Educators Association, nominated as the 2018 YWCA Environmental Woman of Distinction and received the Hidden Hero award from MP Joyce Murray in 2018 for her work in environmental education.

Before dedicating her life to environmental sustainability, Maureen was the CEO and Creative Director of Jack of Hearts Productions, creating the annual Slam City Jam skateboard championships, the annual Music West Festival, managing the Tears Are Not Enough Liveaid fundraising enterprise and producing several TV music specials.

Michael Iachetta - Director

Michael is a leading force for environmental sustainability in Delta where he has taught Socials Studies for 11 years. After completing his Masters of Education at UBC in Sustainability Leadership he helped found the Delta District Green Team in 2009 which has been instrumental to the establishment of Green Teams in Delta schools. Michael is also the Teacher Sponsor for the Delta Youth Sustainability Network, for the Seaquam Environmental Club, and for the Delta Student Sustainability Conferences. Before joining BTCEA's Board, Michael was on BTCEA's Educators’ Advisory Committee. 

Murray Campbell - Director

Murray is a partner with the Vancouver law office of Lawson Lundell LLP, where he has practiced since 1990.  He is a volunteer peer counsellor with the BC Lawyers Assistance Program, and served on its board of directors for six years. He is concerned about environmental sustainability, and is drawn to BCTEA’s key messages and approaches to bringing forth change.

Murray joined the BTCEA Board in 2015. We are grateful to have him on-side and appreciate his thoughtful feedback, critical and clear thinking and his financial support and insight.
