Why are habitat clean-ups important?

Canada is currently listed as the 8th worst country in managing its waste. The waste that ends up in the natural environment, like parks and shorelines, can cause a host of problems for wildlife and the ecosystem. We must clean and preserve these locations and teach youth why waste (plastic waste, in particular) is a significant problem. We need to address the systemic issues with waste production and management within Canada. To do this, we need help from everyone - from big businesses to individual teachers, educators, and youth group leaders like you and your students!

Habitat clean-ups offer an excellent, hands-on learning experience that will enable students to learn about waste management in a fun and safe environment while simultaneously helping make their community and cities a better and healthier place to live!

Why participate in a habitat clean-up with Be the Change Earth Alliance?

At Be the Change Earth Alliance (BTCEA), we believe that experiential learning is hugely beneficial for both students and the community. Students will have the opportunity to be outside and explore their community's natural areas, and the BTCEA facilitators will make the experience fun, interactive, and informative!

Teachers, educators, or youth group leaders can choose to book a shoreline clean-up (we have some funding for chartering busses) or a habitat clean-up located within walking distance of your school or community in Metro Vancouver only.

BTCEA will provide equipment, learning resources, and trained facilitators to educate the students, organize the event, and run the clean-up!

Participating in our habitat clean-ups is an incredible opportunity for students grades 5-12 (ages 9-18) to:

  • Learn about plastic pollution and its effect on marine life and the surrounding ecosystems
  • Have a positive influence on their community
  • Create meaningful connections with their peers and nature
  • Have fun!

Look at the map above to select a park you would like to clean up. Depending on availability, we may have to choose a different park for your group. Enlarge the map and use the search bar!
